50 Shades of Greige

How to find the perfect neutral colors for your home

Beige isn’t all it’s cracked up to be.

Contrary to popular belief, deciding on a neutral color for your home is not an easy feat. Most homeowners gravitate towards beige because of its warmth and ability go with everything- and they’re wrong. Beige is complicated. There are so many different types of beige, ranging from a light brown to a pale sand color, that it can be a long process to find the perfect beige that has the right undertones and color temperature for your home.

You make me happy when walls are gray.

Some homeowners lean toward the grays when searching for the perfect neutral paint for their home. While gray can often look sophisticated and clean, it also often comes across as cold, dark, and lacking warmth. Similar to beige, gray has many undertones and temperatures that make it difficult to match with other colors or furniture.

So which color should you decide?

Gray + Beige = Greige.

Greige is the perfect union between the two favorite neutrals. The yellow undertones in beige, when mixed with the gray, create a rich color that compliments cooler tones and works well with warmer color schemes. The warmer the neutral, the more beige in the greige and vise versa. Having a greige with more gray makes for a cooler neutral that works with color schemes that have more cooling tones.

Choosing greige eliminates the issue of finding a neutral color that coordinates well with both cool and warm tones. You get the warmness from the beige and the elegance of gray, the best of both of worlds.

Decorating with Greige.

Greige has proven itself as the most versatile neutral color. Just because it’s the perfect neutral, doesn’t mean your decor has to be! Brighten your space up by throwing vibrant rugs and colorful decorative pillows into the mix. Add a pop of color by hanging colorful curtains over the windows or by adding a selection of mismatched picture frames to hang on walls. Colors like blues, yellows, greens, and even coral pair beautifully with greige.

Balance is essential when it comes to decorating. If you want to stay true to the neutral color scheme, incorporate a broad spectrum of light and dark neutral accents. Since greige works well with both warm and cool tones, there is less chance of clashing when decorating with an assortment of blacks, whites, and tans. Liven your space up by adding some indoor plants which also gives it a natural pop of color.
